Balvenie

So I just picked up some 12 Yr Balvenie Doublewood and some 10 Yr Glenmorangie. The Bal was harsher than I expected and the Glen was not only far smoother than I expected but probably had a longer finish than any scotch I've ever tried thus far.

I've got to do another comparison but right now the Glen has my vote. To be fair, however, I am now going to the liqour cabinet, and, before my wife gets home, I am going to prepare and enjoy another Bal. Hell, I'm even gonna read the tubes and the little book.

Any comments on these? While at the store I also saw the 15 yr Glen and the other Bals. Any comments on those?

The Doublewood is a dram I discovered only recently (20.99 at Tesco in the UK) and I've fallen in love with it. I wouldn't describe it as 'harsh' at all; far from it. It's one of the smoother whiskies I've tried (the smoothest being Compass Box's The Peat Monster). It also has one of the most complex flavours that I've encountered. You have to like them sherried in order to like the Doublewood, but I do.

Of the Glenmorangies - I've tried some of the 'finished' drams and found them to be good without being spectacular, although the port wood finish was my dram-of-choice for a couple of months.

I revisted Balvenie Doublewood Friday evening. I did it with an open mind and this time it invited me in and I liked it. I think maybe the first time I drank tooooo fast and it overwhelmed me.
