Pick One

You can only pick one SMS that you will live with from now on...

I'm drinking mine now...

Glenfarclas Cask Strength (105)

Strange choice I know, but I like the body/punch/sweetness/velvet.

I would say, almost any Ardbeg. But there several expressions I haven't had a chance to try. Perhaps you could send me a bottle of the Lord of the Isles first, so I can make an informed decision.

cheers.

Ah, I started a similar thread some time ago :-)

My answer now is the same as it was then: Laphroaig 10. It's the SMS I can drink the most often.

[re Laphroaig 10availability]

Laphroaig 10 would be my pick too at the moment.

Over the last 12 months, both of the stores where I buy it here in California have run out occasionally, then it's back on the shelf in a week or two. I would chalk it up to a blip in distribution. I also saw it for sale in Taiwan - at a very reasonable price - recently.

Fine bottle.

If I go with what's available now I think it'd have to be Aberlour A'bunndah, followed closely by Macallan 12.

If I could have my wish it'd be 1985 Macallan 18.

Have to agree. Its the ultimate 'death by peat' Malt.

Reminder to myself: Reorder

We are talking Cask strength, are we not?

The 40% 10 is very good but the CS takes things to another stratosphere.

Ah but ... finances do come into this.

If the question is ..

"You can only pick one SMS that you will live with from now on..."

Which implies that you also have to pay for it from now on as well ....

I'd be more inclined to pick an everyday malt like Glenfarclas 12 or Ardbeg 10 that I can AFFORD to have on a regular basis.

As much as I'd like to say Caol Ila 18, that's like

70 bucks a bottle while I can get the Glenfarclas 12 for more like 30 a bottle. Same goes for Laphroig 15 and Laga 16. I'd love to drink just one of them forever, but can I afford it??? Nah.

Oddly not. Although I'm very fond of the CS I'm generally more in favour of the standard 10yo.

If you can answer this question, either a) you haven't tasted enough whiskies, or b) your wife doesn't drink whisky, or c) both.

These must be new to the "SMS" world...

The provincial liquor distributor here in B.C. has recently brought in the Quarter Cask, but its Laphroaig 10 has disappeared. I find it hard to imagine Laphroaig would drop its best-selling line, which was not only great but also inexpensive, as Islays go. So are other posters seeing fresh supplies, in which case I can at least lobby the liquor board, or is it the 10 disappearing elsewhere, too?

no, I just thought I would add a bit of value. My answer clearly states the SMS I prefer. Cheerful lot round these parts, eh :-)

Yep...I'm with the Aberlour A'bunadh contingent.

Always a Laph 10 CS until I tried this one....bless Waitrose!
