1554 Belgian Black Ale

Anyone else tried this New Belgium Co. product? I thought it was excessively stout. It has quite a bite. It makes a stout like Guinness taste like water compared to it. I really enjoyed it though and to those that like this kinda beer, go try it.

Hmmm. I've had it numerous time and while it sure has more "bite" than Guinness, I wouldn't say its "stout" if you mean its robust with a full palate. I find it nicely smooth, somewhat porterish, and on the sweet side. AFAIK, its brewed with a lager yeast at ale temps, so it has some lager qualities, such as being fairly clean with a lighter finish.

IAWTP. I had it on tap a few times and it was a bit tastier than what the bottles were. Good black beer.

Colorado. New Belgium does make some yummy beers including a very nice Abbey style(double) and Tripel and a VERY good pilsner.(Blue Paddle) My fav retailer says he'll have some La Folie coming soon....the first time I tried that, my palate wasn't sophisticated enough to enjoy it.

PS: Oh yeah, they also make Fat Tire. LOL!

Bill,

Thanks for the New Belgium Co. info.

I went and told those gorillas at our provincially run booze-shop about this seemingly lovely beer and its ilk. I think I will get to Denver before they manage to get their thumbs out and investigate New Belgium. "Tis the nature of the beast.......!

I am not so sure about the other Provinces but here in Quebec we do have a rather flourishing beer industry, i.e. a lot of what we call "micro breweries" as well as a healthy import scene (alas more Belgian than anything els, but it is improving ) and of course, Sleeman's. This latter is a small-ish brewery in Ontario, making some really beautiful beers : several ale-types, which is understandable as ale is the main Canadian beer, a honey-brown and a red beer. All 5% except the newly introduced "Clear" which is 4%. Also,Nova Scotian beer is available : a class of its own. Oland's is the Big Daddy of the NS breweries, their schooner is truly excellent ! Alexander Keith's IPA is also very good.

Best

Oh My! I almost forgot about the Trippel they make. It is a thick, tasty brew...BUT it has ALOT of alcohol in it (around 9% I think) as suggested by the title. My girlfriend could drink 1 of these and then be quite tipsy and have to take a nap. LOL! It is definitely not a beer for a "lightwieght."

You should be well treated by Unibroue, eh?

That last one is a joke right?

Yes, Unibrue does make a few alright products if you like the sort.

"There is no dispute [possible] about colours and tastes" said Herr Ulrich von Cicero, Brewmaster for Batz Bitzen Puff AG in 1837.

We do like Alexander Keith.

Guinness is pretty close to water anyway. Just because it's black doesn't mean it's thick and "bitey" (I call the little one 'bitey'). Try not to let your eyes be the final judge of flavor.

My wife loves 1554 and drinks it on tap all the time. It's nice and smooth and mild with not a lot of hop bitterness (unlike me she only tolerates hops) but nice hop flavor. Plus at New Belgium they must have some funky yeast strain for this beer because it's definitely got some kind of subtle yeast "twang" lingering around in there. Anybody know what yeast they use?

"ED" said it....European lager yeast fermented at relatively high temps. Good result, imho.
