Sips: Beer - Cin. Enquirer

Since we're still enjoying some cold weather, here's a winter warmer that will make anyone sit up and take notice. You'll find Imperial Stout, from that remarkable little Colorado brewery, Left Hand Brewing Co., is different from most stouts. Nothing at all like a dry Irish stout, it's the authentic Russian Imperial style, which means coal black and smooth, with plenty of flavor from both roasted malt and a ton of hops. I especially like the chocolate and strong coffee notes that come through along with the roasted flavor. It's a full-bodied, strong beer, perfect for a cold evening. At 9.5 percent alcohol by volume, the 22-ounce bottle ($4.99 at many area retailers) is great for sharing.

I was alarmed by the appearance of Left Hand's IS; it was too light-colored, I thought. But after a sip or two I was infatuated. It was warming, with a syrupy texture, malt flavors that reminded me of vanilla extract, and some peppery hop tastes.

Left Hand's Black Jack Porter was also light-colored for the style. But it proved to be another unique and delicious take on its style.

I'm drinking some right now... I like it, but it doesn't seem very... "imperial". The Imperial Stouts I've had in the past were a bit more monstrous than this one. But, I AM enjoying it...

I know what you mean. It's not the biggest example of the style (though it does have an appropriate ABV).

I almost bought LH's IS again tonight but opted for Storm King instead.
