Yup,
We're off to visit the USA for about 2½ months, leaving here Wednesday, and arriving in NYC on Thursday afternoon.
Thanks to help, advice and informed suggestions (you know who you are) we're hoping to have some magic visits to afw friends here and there, and discover quite a number of west coast wineries in many different styles, from Washington to Santa Barbara.
I doubt if I will be able to post here, but maybe some of our friends will send reports from time to time.
Yippee.

I don't know if you are carrying a notebook computer with you on the trip. If so, you might contact one of the US ISPs that have many access points and be able to get a dial-up account to use during your trip. EarthLink has thousands of access points, and is running a 6 month 1/2 price special (credit card or cheque account debit), PeoplePC is about half the price, with a large number of access points. Download a listing of phone numbers to use for the areas of the US that you plan to visit. Of course, for a holiday trip, you may well wish to just enjoy without having computer access. As a US citizen (living in Virginia now, moving next week about 200 miles to North Carolina), I wish you the best on your trip, and enjoyment of some of the fine regional wines found here.

And, indeed, they appeared. Rather delayed by being fingerprinted (and photographed! I think DNA samples are still pending, though) through a system which provided 4 clerks for all incoming non-US residents. Clearly another way in which to create a positive impression of the US abroad.
Ian was good enough to bring a number of goodies, and the fois gras with which we started our meal last night was special. Notes on the wines later - we offered a couple of VA wines which it seemed unlikely Ian and Jacquie would otherwise taste, and they showed variably.
Anyway: present, accounted for, equipped with new laptop and map, and dispatched in search of autumnal foliage before departing for points West.
Delightful to put faces and in vivo details to names and posts: Ian is scarily like my father (!) and - to choose but one adjective - garrulous, while Jacquie's single adjective might be refined. Excelent company, even if they did decline to play bridge for money while jetlagged and sleep-deprived ;).
