cruise booze

Any contributors into cruising? We've just returned from a trip on the Legend of the Seas - China to Japan and Korea and were disappointed with the price of booze on the ship.

Winelist had fair selection but, for example, entry level style Wolf Blass Yellow Label Merlot (retails for less than AUD$10 in Australia) cost approx AUD $46.50. Price in US dollars converted to AUD at the ship's exchange rate and including the compulsory! 15% gratuity. They even left space on the docket in case you wanted to add an extra tip.

There were a few "critter" wines a little cheaper but we chose not to indulge. Beer and spirit prices were similarly high.

Give that the ship is duty free while at sea the pricing is especially galling. Also counter productive to cash flow - we rarely saw people in the dining room with a bottle of wine on the table.

PS planning a trip to Burgundy and Provence next June - if anyone's in town for a shared bottle....

Cheers!

Been there done that felt your pain. FWIW Royal Carib is one of the worst offenders pricewsie. On Princess 45.50 (38 US plus obligatory tip) will get you a village chablis the entry level Aussie will run around 35 (US) Thye have several at the 25-30 range. Not great but better selection and pricing than you found.

Of course the $25 corkage makes their stuff seem cheap unless you are carrying aboard some nice labels, but who in these times can fly with good wine without worry about tarmac delays, tossed bags and other hazards? Joseph Coulter Joseph Coulter Cruises and Vacations LLC

Carnival allows you to bring 1 bottle per person in carry on luggage. We stashed a bottle each in our checked luggage as well. For the first time in 8 cruises they confiscated 1 of our bottles. They let 1 go in our checked luggage. We had 3 bottles for 2 people for a week, but we managed. They have a Malbec on their list that is good and very reasonable.
