Enhancing the alcohol content of beer

Is this done by adding sugar? Yeast? Does this increase carbonation?

*adding fermentables, i.e. sugars. Typically it's dome by adding more malt, as in making stronger coffee/tea.

Not really.

If you put it in the bottle and then seal it it will and make a damn fine explosive device at that.

Well, other fermentables too... Merkin "malt liquor" with added corn syrup, and Belgian ales with added candy sugar, Sam Adams brews kicked up with maple syrup, and so on.

Typically it is done by adding corn (most US mega beers) or rice (budweiser). If these beers were all malt, using only the malt used, they would have only 2% or so, instead of 5%.
