Haier 1/2 barrel cooler

Hey all - a friend of mine picked up a Haier 1/2 barrel cooler last week. Along with it, he got himself a 1/4 barrel of New Glarus Belgian Red. Yummy stuff! So, he thinks he's got CO2 correct, etc. Yesterday, he poured two pints for us and they were way off color. He didn't even notice, but I noticed right away. I asked if he had gotten a new barrel, or mixed it with something... he hadn't. It looked rather gray/brown and cloudy. Not the clear, wine red color it should be. It tasted ok, but not great. Not much hint of cherry at all. At my pleading he poured us another and hey - it's red again - and full of cherry flavor. So, anyone have any thoughts on this? I figure what he tapped first was old beer sitting in the line - but he's only had the setup for a week. He did say he hadn't tapped a pint since he first got it though - so maybe 5 days had gone by. And, would there be 2 pints in the lines? I know some of you have these so I'm hoping someone will know how to correct this. At $95 a 1/4 barrel, we don't want to waste two pints, if it's not drunk every day.

What you got with the first pour or two was sediment (from yeast or possible small cherry particles). This is perfectly normal for live and/or non-filtered beer.

There's no way two pints would remain in the lines (unless you're tapping directly from the brewery :-). If you know the inner diameter and length of your line you can calculate the amount of fluid left in the line. If I did my calculations right, you'd need about 52 feet of 1/4" ID beer line to have a pint staying in the line. (But who knows, I may be off by an order of magnitude.)
