New brewery in the works for West Side

Brothers Mike and Jim Gunnarson want to prove that "the West Side is the best side, and we can make great beer," as Jim Gunnarson puts it.

They plan to open Bridgetown Brew Works by spring of 2014. Though they have a location in mind, they're waiting on financing before they sign a lease -- or reveal the spot. Jim Gunnarson said they'll be "somewhere on Harrison Avenue between Miamitown and Cheviot."

He's been home brewing for years, and his brother, Mike, has the business acumen (but does enjoy great beer, Jim Gunnarson points out).

"I had a dream of opening a brewery back in the mid-'90s, when things started to boom down on Main Street," Jim Gunnarson said. "I was young and lost interest when the market changed. As you start getting older and have children, you start thinking about some sort of legacy you can pass down to them."

Their flaship beers, made from recipes Jim Gunnarson or someone in the brothers' group of brewers has come up with, will be Oak Hills Lager, Hairpin IPA, Muddy Creek Wheat, Bridgetown Hefeweizen and Roland Root Beer.

Seasonal or special runs will be offered on a monthly basis.

"We are trying to do things in a way that keeps the heritage of brewing alive," Jim Gunnarson said.
