The beer industry is very big. There are even grants provided by Canada and the US to find favorable evidence that when taken in moderation that beer can be good for the general masses. So don't worry - they (meaning the government and the beer companies) want to keep it as popular as possible! Although there's still the problem of under-aged drinking.

Grant Basics 101!

I live just outside of Phila in Montgomery county and I used to commute to Atlantic City for work. I seem to remember them being able to sell beer - beer selling outlets even on Sunday.

I thought too that only beer could be sold in PA only from the state owned liquor stores but remember seeing a beer outlet store on Broad St. in Philly and even one in a small mini mall in my area.

So don't

Hmmm. Seen from here, I think your government is more worried about the sentiments of your "Moral Majority"... And what you (them) call "underage drinking" is a bit funny. Your people can carry guns at 18, some even drive cars (talk about dangerous) at 14, but a can of beer is prohibited until

21... Small wonder that scary things happen once they're "liberated" to the goods. Same in the UK, BTW, though on a different level. Funny country, sometimes. Cheers, Joris

The thread above was about Bergen County NJ and, then, NJ when it's Blue Laws prevented package goods to be sold on Sunday. Depends on WHEN you commuted to AC, of course (and I doubt you went thru Bergen County)- NJ has allowed Sunday alcohol sales for several decades now...

No beer is sold in PA State liquor stores, that I've ever seen. Beer by the case at distributors, smaller quantities (2 six packs or less?) at bars and "take out" shops, IIRC.

It doesn't really have that much to do with the Moral Majority, Joris, but there's no need to feel ignorant, stupid, parochial, or senselessly anti-American just because you got that wrong: plenty of Americans seem to think the same thing. It's actually coming from both right-wing religious cranks AND left-wing "progressive" whackos...a beautifully historic alliance against alcohol in America. Prohibition always claimed as many progressives as conservatives; why the Bible-thumpers got blamed for it is beyond me. But then, I actually looked into the history instead of making glib assumptions.

Our government is obsessed with getting re-elected, and you do that by bowing to the latest media frenzy and the special interest groups that make the most noise, like the NRA (the gun lobby) and MADD, Mothers Against Drunk Driving, who essentially want to stop drunk driving by not letting anyone drink anymore.
