1919: Having been approved by 36 states, the 18th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution is ratified, authorizing Prohibition in the United States one year after ratification. It would go into effect on Jan.
16, 1920, banning the sale, manufacture and transportation of alcohol, and last until it was repealed by the ratification of the 21st Amendment in 1933.
