To all North Carolina residents

To those of you who live in North Carolina, you are undoubtedly aware of the ABC laws restricting "malt beverages" to an alcoholic content of 6% or less. It goes without saying that this prevents us from enjoying MANY MANY wonderful beers.

However... The dark ages may soon be over.

House Bill 392 is seeking to amend the laws to allow a malt beverage to be sold with an alcohol content as high as 15%. The best part of the news is that it has passed the State House of Representatives, and awaits passage in the Senate. The current update can be found here:

I enourage all of you to e-mail your NC State Senator and encourage his/her support for the passage of this bill.

Best of luck to you Carolingians. You've been in a beery post- Prohibition Dark Ages for waaaay too long.

But at 15%, you still won't be allowed to drink Dogfish Head's World Wide Stout. What's up with that?

15% might not be a perfect ending, but it's something...

Rogue's product line is available here... I wonder if I'll be able to get Old Crusty for the first time since college...

They were shooting for removing the limit completely, but gave in to capping it at 15% just to keep the bill alive.

HB392 has passed the Senate. That means it only requires Gov. Mike Easley's signature... OR.... If he doesn't sign it within 10 days it becomes law. He could veto, but that's doubtful.

That's great. Georgia passed the law last year, but it took 6 months after the bill passed before any new stuff starting hitting the shelves.
