Local Brewer Tapped To Run Riverfront Restaurant Moerlein Lager House To Open In Spring 2011

POSTED: 4:31 pm EDT September 2, 2009 . CINCINNATI -- A local brewing company was tapped Wednesday to build a new restaurant and brewpub in the city's Riverfront Park.

Construction will begin early next year on the Moerlein Lager House, which is expected to open in spring 2011 on Main Street, bordering the park's event lawn.

The Cincinnati Park Board selected Christian Moerlein to operate the two-story restaurant and brewery, which will accommodate 500 patrons and 600 patrons in an outdoor beer garden.

The park is currently under construction as part of the Banks riverfront development, and will include a plaza of water jets along Mehring Way and a grand stairway with water-filled basins and a glass-floored walkway.

City officials said preliminary plans for the restaurant include a distinctive architecture, balconies and a "green" roof, which will allow geothermal heating and cooling of the building.

The restaurant and its outdoor terraces will overlook the park, Ohio River, Roebling Suspension Bridge and Great American Ball Park.
