Edinburgh, Newcastle, and Sunderland

hey,

I'll visit Edinburgh, Newcastle, and Sunderland in May. Could someone tell if there are any breveries left allowing visitors, please? A long, long time ago I visited Vaux, which seems to be out of business;-( Caledonian does not take any visitors any more, and I was not able to figure out Newcastle's policy. (If there still is a brewery).

I would also be grateful for suggestions of good pubs serving good (preferably real) ale...

I will also check CAMRA's site, so don't RTFM me, please.

Cheers,

Kari the Finn

Vaux has gone, so has Newcastle Brewery. In Newcastle there is Big Lamp Brewery, out in the suburbs. A phone call might get you a brewery visit. The pub next door to the brewery is well worth a visit

No. Thanks for the tip Brett. I'll order it right away.

It seems that 15 years ago UK was much more like beer lover's heaven;-( I still remember the smell and feeling of the small breweries there. Here in Finland we practically have six breweries left. And only the two smallest ones are independent. Fortunately we have plenty of pubs serving 100 - 150 different beers around the world - including real ale.

Appearance can be deceptive Kiri. What has happened is that those larger breweries have been replaced by a vast number of microbreweries many of whom are brewing top quality, unique and interesting ales. The breweries section of the GBG will knock your socks off Kari.

In or around Newcastle you could try the Wylam and Mordue breweries for a look 'round.

Pubs, try:

The Cluny, the Cumberland Arms and the Free Trade all serve good beer esp. the Cluny with imports. All located, sort of, between the City Centre and Byker.

The Bridge & the Crown Posada in the City Centre.

The Forth on Pink Lane - very studenty but a good pint and some good bottles nonetheless.

The three Head of Steam pubs always do great beer

Lots more pubs do a great pint but these are ones I get to frequently so I know for certain the beer is good.
