Last orders?

On the way home from a family outing we thought we'd stop for some food. If anyone knows the "Dog and Pheasant" in deepest Sussex is, please give it a miss. We went in at 2.59 p.m. asking for the menu as I ordered a round of drinks. As I paid, the barmaid (with a face sour enough to curdle the beer) announced that was our first and last drink as they were closing, and rang the bell. I cannot help but feel that was a very shallow trick on her part - she knew we were looking to eat, but she screwed the price of a round of drinks out of us. She may have made a few pence profit, but she's lost my goodwill.

Read this decscription and thought you were talking about at famous brewing pub in Cockermouth, as this has been our experience there!! (See reviews of it in Beer in the Evening!!!)

OK, poor customer service, but if the main purpose of your visit is eating, you should always ask for the menu before ordering any drinks.

On more than one occasion I've bought a drink and found that either the food was ludicrously expensive or there was nothing that appealed.

A lot of independently-run pubs seem to underestimate the demand for mid-afternoon food, which many pubs of the Brewer's Fayre type do very well out of.
