My previous visits to Belgium have been Brussels, Antwerp (my fave) and Ghent. I'm now thinking of visiting the Liege/Maastricht area for a spot of beer tourism. Any recommendations? Liege seems a lively town with a few watering holes.

Yes, Liege was a good place for a bar crawl: I especially remember the Vaudree at the back of the train station - or at least before I had the Kasteelbeer at 12 per cent...
There was a bar/brewery opposite the train station in Namur, I forget the name but you couldn't miss it - cross over and go left and it's on your left - literally, at certain times they shut the bar and used the brewing equipment that was behind the servery, and when they finished brewing and cleaned down, they started serving...
You definitely want to visit the Vaudree in Liege Angleur - about 100m from Angleur railway station. It's on the corner of a street of red brick houses. Small, but never closes - 24/7/365. I didn't eat when I was there, but the food looked good. They have a massive beer list, draught and bottled.
The Vaudree II in the town centre is pretty good too, but it doesn't keep the same hours, nor does it stock the same range of beers, AFAIR.
The original Vaudree is affordably reachable by taxi from the centre as well as by local trains and buses.
