Starbucks Mocha = Chocolate :(

Hi All,

By definition, Mocha is chocolate mixed with coffee. However, baristas as Starbucks insist on calling their chocolate syrup, which has no coffee, "Mocha". Why is this? It's very confusing because I HATE the taste of coffee and would hate to have any mixed with my hot chocolate. I called Starbucks Customer Service and they gave some lame "it's a Marketing Decision" response. Any else know why this is?

No, by definition Mocha is a port in Yemen, near the southern end of the Red Sea, that used to be a major source of coffee beans grown in the nearby highlands.

There are at least two explanations why coffee mixed with chocolate started to be called mocha: either resellers tried to trick buyers into thinking that "lesser" coffees had Mocha's subtleties by mixing in small quantities of chocolate and labeling it as Mocha; alternatively, the combination was named in honor of the chocolate nuances of true Mocha.

I can only suppose that Starbucks customer service was telling you the truth; why would they make that up? Besides, they're well known for doing things because of marketing decisions. Tall, grande, venti.

And if you hate the taste of coffee, why would you have anything to do with Starbucks?

Or is this simply a troll?

I like their hot chocolate a lot and my co-workers are always making me go there with them. Still would like to know an insider's guide as to why Starbucks would make-up their own definition of Mocha, ignoring the common definition? They might as well call their "coffee", "lemon juice" while their at it.

erm...hello...hi.... I work at Starbucks for 2 and half yrs now...don't ask me why...i think i've been brainwashed...at starbucks, mocha is coffee and chocolate...and a hot cocoa is just chocolate. unless u want the full recipe to making a cup of mocha and a cup of hot cocoa starbucks style...my gf works at Spinelli's and i've got other friends working at other coffee chains...all methods of making a mocha 'drink' is similar...but Mocha is also a name of a port in Yemen where beans from Arabia are shipped from...and if you're a Starbucks regular...you'll know that the company sells the Arabian Mocha Java beans..but yea...its a common thing that when someone says 'mocha'..the first thing that comes to mind is 'coffee and chocolate'...
