Notes from the hills - First flop 2006

Hi, just back from sampling the first reserved invoice (#1) from one of the most prestigious estates ( please understand that I can't mention the name here.) To put it short: no rain - no juice in the leaves - no taste in the cup (plus some obvious manufacturing problems dunting that first production run in 2006). Last week in Gangtok I was able to grab some FF, which was sold as "Goomtee", but looked more like "Temi" to me. Same story. Bottom line: let's wait for rain and the leaves that follow. It just doesn't look too promising these days with beautiful clear skies and lots of sunshine. I keep you updated.

Best, Karsten / Darjeeling

Karsten,

Thanks for your report. It will be interesting the see which of our American companies jump on the bandwagon and offer the teas you describe just to be first out. We'll be watching the sky.

I keep on visiting gardens all over the district these days (incognito, hehe) and all I can find is bone-dry dusty ground with sad looking bushes wherever I go. Even the more drought resistant clonals don't look too happy, and the appearance of the fresh shoots is nothing to write home about. However, there will be more tea coming in the next couple days and weeks (I'm waiting for leaves from around Mirik), but now we're all VERY nervous and prefer hallucinating about the second flush instead.

Bummer.

Looks like it's going to be a hard year to find estate teas...

Update: there are suspicious movements and rumbling and thrumming noises around and from within Makhaibari, Margarets Hope and Arya. I keep some clean cups ready.

Rohini and Thurbo joined in, some heavy steam emerging from their chimneys these days. I'll get the first samples around Wednesday. Update follows.
