Tea dummy has a question

I have found that I really like what is called Jasmine Green Tea, even better than what is called green or jasmine. But I can't help wondering if there is really a difference between it and standard jasmine. Can anyone shed some light on this question? It seems to have a more full-bodied presence and "mouth-feel" (beer talk.) And, unlike jasmine or green, it almost demands to be drunk without sweetener of any kind.

TIA,

Dave

"Jasmine" seems to have a number of different meanings on a tea package. Sometimes it means black tea with jasmine, sometimes it means black tea that has been near some jasmine, sometimes it means pure jasmine blossoms, and sometimes it means green tea with jasmine.

Jasmine green would certainly be different from straight green or pure jasmine. Obviously, it's a blend of the two. Other than that, I think we need more information.

I don't know the answer to this, but I love Jasmine Green also and I'm watching for whatever anyone says. And, there's a Chinese grocery near my house that has at least 12 different brands! And, a Jasmine Green iced tea which is straight from heaven. I do see jasmne blossoms in some of the blends. The iced tea has some kind of jasmine essence added to it; I've been looking for that to buy but can't find it anywhere.

As David Harris said in his reply, you'll have to supply much more information, though I'll presume that you are speaking of a green tea with Jasmine blossoms. Really there is no "standard" jasmine...

Go to a large retailer such as

and browse their offerings. You'll see that there are *quite* a few green/jasmines encompassing a wide price range. My favorite is the "Dragon/Phoenix" which a re little pearls of green tea and lovely jasmine blossoms.

I'm sure that you'll find something there...

Hi Dave,

"Green Tea" can mean any of a number of different green teas. It is sort of a generic term describing the category rather than a specific tea.

There is no such thing as a *standard* Jasmine. "Jasmine Tea" can be *any* tea scented with jasmine, not necessarily green tea.

Jasmine Green is sort of a generic term. It means Green Tea, could be any green tea, which has been scented with jasmine flowers. There are many different grades of jasmine scented green teas, largely having to do with the process of scenting the tea and the quality of the base green tea used. The fewer flowers you see the better the grade is a rule I have often heard. The more times they mix a given tea with flowers the better the grade. Higher grades will be scented (flowers mixed with, then removed, from the tea) several times.

Do a search on the web for "jasmine scented green tea" and you find several articles describing the process of scenting a tea with jasmine flowers.

My personal favorite is "Jasmine Dragon Pearls" although I hear white teas take the scent rather well too.

The problem is that there really is no standard nomenclature.

Standard Jasmine Tea is some kind of tea, either green or black but sometimes some kind of oolong, mixed with jasmine flowers. "Yellow Box" jasmine tea seems to be a light oolong with jasmine.

That's a very wide range of tea.

Jasmine green tea, well at least you know it is green tea with jasmine flowers in it. You don't know what kind of green tea or how much jasmine it is, but that's a start.

ANY jasmine tea should be drunk without sweetner. If it is too bitter tasting to drink plain, try making it with slightly cooler water.
