where to buy loose tea locally

I'm a tea newb, who wants to get into the game a bit more. I'm expecting some samplers from online places for christmas (woohoo!), but in the mean time I want to buy a bit of different loose leafs locally but I have no idea where to look. I live in Westchester county somewhat near NYC. Is there some good website or reference page I can find that would list places I could buy loose tea?

Hi Andy,

Of course, it depends on what you're looking for. Tea and Sympathy down on Greenwich Street between Seventh and Eighth Avenues has an assortment of teas drunk by British people and their admirers. For Chinese tea, you might want to try

The Tea Gallery

131 Allen Street (Just north of Delancy)

They just got their Da Hong Po in, so apropos of recent discussions, you might want to try them. Other places exist, and many are listed, but they are lesser and not worth bothering with for the most part. Exceptions, always.

Ten Ren is on Mott Street just south of Canal, but I recommend you refrain from buying anything from them since they are not user- friendly, and they specialize in the hard sell.

Take a look at Silvertips Tea

in Tarrytown. They specialize in Indian tea, especially Darjeeling. I've never been to the store, but I've bought tea online and was quite happy with both quality and price. (Usual disclaimer: no commercial interest/satisfied customer.)

Whew. They seem really expensive Dean. $16 for a pound of Assam CTC? I've never ordered form them but that seems excessive to me.

Melinda,

I guess I should say that I'm a Darjeeling fan, and their Organic Makaibari Estate 2nd Flush 2006 FTGFOP1S is only $23 a pound, and it's delightful. Their Organic Makaibari Estate Autumnal FTGFOP1S is also very good, and at $17 a pound is a steal, IMHO. Granted, I look to Upton when I want CTC Assam.

Hi Michael,

teas drunk by admirers of British people? Hmm, maybe I'll have another visit to NYC sooner than I thought. You'll find me in the corner at Tea and Sympathy being admired I hope!

Kind regards, ... obviously nothing useful nor constructive to say, as per usual ...

You will definitely be admired as you are admirable. But, our AoBP group meets in a pub. There is always the promise of tea, but strangely we never quite get to it.

Ha! Likewise.
