ARGH!!

I just spent the day visiting every liquor store in three cities in an unsuccessful quest for Lagavulin 16yo. The proprietors of these various establishments all had the same sad tale to relate: there is currently a single malt famine in the state of Oregon.

Liqour stores in Oregon are all state-owned, and distribution of stock for the entire state is apparently determined by state regulators at one or two import/warehouse points in Portland. I have been given to understand that since Oregon is a relatively small market for single malts, the allotment which comes into the state is already small, to the extent that if and when Lagavulin does make it into the state again each of my local stores is likely to get only a couple of cases (or less). And they're saying even that might not happen before the end of this year.

This, in a word, sucks.

So... I appeal to the newsgroup with the following question: is it possible to purchase single malts on-line? If so, how/where?

Being that I live in the US, where each state, and often each county and each township have their own laws concerning alcohol regulation I realize that this may not be a simple question. But any information along these lines is welcome. The Lagavulin has run out, and the Laphroiag is getting low even as I type this!

Thanks.

The importance of a collection is dramatically underscored. When does feast or famine come? Who can predict law or navigate vagaries of availability. Who, to care about these thingz?

A collection emulates living thing. A thing you feed and gives back to you. A nourishment. There is no leverage in it. Who cares? What if the Oregon shortage spreads like vectors? Picture and hope your sheft is full.

Barring a direct hit, my collection withstands a short war. It lasts through lazy periods where nothing is updated. With cabinet locked, it withstands my children and my wife and the babysitter and Mr. Perrero. If dropped from my mind it withstands me. Then my family can withstand me. Entonces, a mi familia pueden (como se dice "withstand"?) me.

Open the door and consider - easier for you to manufacture a proper diamond, than to duplicate each scotch by your own hand. These are my riches........... among other things. But, these are my riches and I have chosen to own them.

Well, I'd guess 11, unless we're talking mentally.

You make a good point. However, a "collection" doesn't necessarily equal "a fully stocked warehouse."

I do have a collection of about two dozen fine single malts. I even have more than one bottle of several of my preferred brands. Alas, any supply will eventually run out if it is consumed regularly and replacements are unavailable. My Laphroaig, for example, has been recently backed-up, so I am secure there for the next several months, at least.

The Lagavulin, OTOH, is one I've been trying to resupply for somewhat more than 2 months, without success. When the current bottle is gone, there is (I'm told) no more to be had in the state.

So while I agree that a collection is a noble and sensible thing to have, one must supply the collection from /somewhere/, and hence my current problem.

Well, I tried this site but their schtch/single malt links don't work. What gives? Everything else at the site seems to be working.

It ain't just Oregon. After nearly a year Lagavulin has finally returned to Denver - with up to 100% increase over last year's prices.

Yes, through wine depots. Try the following two, based in NY. I don't know about Pops, but Chambers St ships anywhere. Shipping can be expensive.

Hey, thanks John! This does look promising. Being in Oregon, anything shipped from NY is going to be charged at the highest zone-rate. But these bottle prices are somewhat better than the off-the-shelf prices here, and will partially off-set the shipping charges.

And the ability to get a malt which can't otherwise be had in the state, well, that's it's own compensation. :-)
