Booker Noe is dead

I know I've not been active here for quite a while, but I thought you'd like to know: Booker Noe, the distiller emeritus of Jim Beam and Jim Beam's grandson, died in his sleep last night. Booker was rightly a legend in the business, a real distiller who became a spokesman for both Jim Beam bourbon and the whole industry. His signature bourbon, Booker's, was a first -- uncut, unfiltered, just the way Booker liked to drink it. I enjoyed Booker's company, I continue to enjoy his whiskey. So I celebrate his life, but I do mourn his death.

Malt Advocate is honored to publish his eulogy next issue, provided to us by Jim Kokoris of Jim Beam, who wrote the eulogy and will be delivering it at Booker's funeral.

Go with God, Booker; I'm sure he's got whiskey waiting for you.

Sad news. A great distiller indeed. Will raise a glass of the ol' JB in memory at the weekend (and it'll be the Black one!)

While I never met him, I hope his shade can smile; he left the American whisky industry in better shape than it's been in years, both in economic terms and in terms of the respect for its product at home and worldwide.

Even when I was younger and didn't like any kind of whisky, Jim Beam rye seemed more interesting than the typical bourbon.

At a tasting more recently, while un-tutored on the finer points of appreciating American whisky, the whisky titled "Booker's" struck me as the best of its company clan - distinctly bourbon, and un-compromising: "Not afraid to offend someone with flavor".

So tonight I'll raise a glass to you, Booker.

Wow, that hurts. I have a TON of respect for that gentleman! Booker's reserve is what made me start caring about single barrel and small batch bourbon. I will absolutely have some in his honor.

Rest easy Booker, you made a drink that gladdened mens hearts.

Email: Actually my feet are big not medium.
