malt whisky by Charles MacLean

I just received this book as a gift. It seems quite complete with sections on history, how malt whisky is made, a directory of distilleries, tasting notes, etc. The high quality photography and large format make it seem more like a coffee-table book than a serious reference. Opinions?

It's an upper class reference, much more than Jackson's Bible. MacLean gives you more information about whisky in general Jackson for example focuses on the smell and taste.

I like the book very much. The history section is the most complete I've seen yet, and I have relied on it when presenting information to others. The pictures are fabulous, and I particularly like the one which shows a number of sample bottles of whisky lined up from lightest colour (clear) to the darkest.

I haven't used the tasting notes as much, sticking with Michael Jackson's, but the other sections are all interesting. The timeline at the bottom of the pages is interesting too.

A good book.

the book is really great. but there is one thing nobody seems to notice. the distillery's on the maps of the highlands, islay and speyside are not correct. it starts with some of the higher numbers.....

I don't understand. What 'higher numbers..."?

I'm really enoying this book. The background info is extensive, and seems to cooreleate well with other sources. The tasing notes are pretty minimal and don't rival/threaten MJ's. As a long time (20+ years) homebrewer of beer, I know that MJ isn't "the horse's mouth" but represents one, very educated experienced, taster.

Thanks to all for their opinions.

on page 101 in my book (german version) is a map of scotland. shown are the distillerys on "the islands"...... then there are dots with a number in it for every distillery. dot# 7 is on the ilse of jura but in the description on the left side it is pointed out as "bruichladdich". from that point on, every number is wrong.... and that is the same for the maps of the other regions!

maybe this fault is only in the german version of the book?!?

Seems to be only in your German edition. In my English language edition, item #7 on the "key to distilleries" is "Isle of Jura."

Interesting though.
