Milford New Zealand single malt

Re the recent correspondence :

In the village where I live, in Scotland, 6 of us have a "malt whisk(e)y" club : we meet every couple of months for a blind tasting, usually of at least 3 bottles, have a bite to eat, then sit and sip and solve the world's problems for the rest of the evening.

We take turns to host it, and the host decides what we'll taste, usually according to a theme. In November it was my turn to host, and I decided to use "Cousins" as my theme, i.e., single malts that are not actually Scottish. I chose Green Spot, an Irish malt, Penderyn, a Welsh malt, and Milford from New Zealand. They were all quite light and Speyside-like in character, with Green Spot being the clear favourite, and with Milford putting up a good show, for its clean and refreshing character, whilst Penderyn was deemed least favoured by our group of wizened tasters ...

So, I'd recommend giving Milford a try ...

I have a bottle of the Connemara peated single malt open at the moment. It's less complex than Scottish island peated malts, but quite a pleasant dram.

A year or two ago, I was gifted two 5 cl bottles of Penderyn from the distiller ($35 import duty!). One of them remains unopened. A reminder that the finest Welsh Single Malt Whisky is the worst whisky I've ever tasted. I find even Clan McGregor far superior!

I don't mean to split hairs, but the Green Spot is an unblended pot still, rather than a malt.

The Connemara peated malt is quite young and not overly complex. Cooley produce some malts with good complexity, especially some of the peated bottlings by Cadenhead.

Oh, and I had a Lamerlaw bottled by Cadenhead also - it was very nice. What was interesting about it was that it was called a 10 yr old, even though it was matured for 12 years, because the final two years of maturation was not in New Zealand but in Scotland.
