Smokehead Single Islay Malt

Feb 16, 2007 3 Replies

I came across this in a supermarket a couple of days ago and picked up a bottle.

Obviously a young malt and therefore a bit on the "raw" side, but it's a very nice dram for all that with bags of peat and distinct sweet (sherry?) notes. Am I right in thinking that this is actually a young Lagavulin?

I couldn't decide if it was a IB Lagavulin or an IB Ardbeg, but I think I'm wavering on the side of Lagavulin. Having said that, it also reminded me of an IB Laphroaig that I've got. I also didn't think it was overly young - maybe an eight or nine year old.

My guess too is Lagavulin. (See thread from july 2006 called "Smokehead").

Funny you should say that. Now the bottle has been open a couple of days: I had another dram this evening and my immediate thought was "Ardbeg"! But on balance I'm still inclined towards Lagavulin. A difficult one...
