Fairly inexpensive and consistently good wines

Hi All, There are always requests from newbies for inexpensive wine recommendations. Here are some wines that "I know by heart", are fairly consistent from year to year, and I always have them on my shopping list.

Columbia Crest Cabernet Sauvignon Grand Estates - Washington State, USA Chateau Ste. Michelle Cabernet Sauvignon - Washington State, USA Gallo of Sonoma Cabernet Sauvignon - California, USA Hess Select Cabernet Sauvignon - California, USA Beringer Cabernet Sauvignon Founder's Estate - California, USA Baron Herzog Chenin Blanc - California, USA Ferrari Carano Fume Blanc - Sonoma, California, USA Bogle Petite Sirah - Clarksburg, California, USA Cline Zinfandel - Sonoma, California, USA Ravenswood Zinfandel Vintner's blend - California, USA

And many, many more that I can't remember.

FWIW, Dick

No, Dry Creek Vineyards (though think there's Chenin Blanc is actually Clarksburg AVA, not Dry Creek)

Should give the Syrah a try- can be good QPR for $6

Certainly!! And cheerfully. :)

How does the Beringer Stone Cellars compare to the Founder's Estate?

On that line is a great Pizza Wine...Riunite Lambrusco. They also have been a trendsetter for years witha twist off cap. Never had a corked bottle!!!

I've never tried the Stone Cellars. Out of curiosity I stopped at a local World Market (Costco) in the Minneapolis, MN area to check it out, but they don't carry it - at least not this week. :-)

Do you mean Cost Plus? World Market is not Costco.

I've tried both and the extra $6cdn for the Founders is worth it.

Is that a Cost Plus World Market or a Costco? I did not think there were related.

Hi Dimitri, Your're probably right, but damn, I thought we had an in to the Costco bargains that everyone (in other states) talks about. I guess it is Cost Plus. ;-(

I should have bought a case of the Lily Pad Merlot, a Frog's Leap second-label, at $7/ea. It was an excellent quaff.

Thanks for reminding me.

I seem to lean toward Australian wines, at least at this time, and I wanted to say I think Hardy's Nottage Hill Cabernet Shiraz blend is an extremely versatile and friendly wine. It is fruity, but not sweet, dry but not too much tannin, try it and let me know what you think. Linda

Hi Linda, I had a 1998 Nottage Hill Cabernet Shiraz last year, and I would agree, fruity, pleasant and very good - but the 98 was a little thin.

I haven't had any since, mainly because my shopping list is determined by availability and price. I check the weekly wine sales of retailers in my area - World Market, Surdyk's, and others - and if I recognize a wine that I like and the price is right, I'll purchase a few bottles.

So many wines I like, but if they're never on sale it's out of sight, out of mind.

Thanks for the reminder, Dick
