New Year's Eve Wines

Notes from Dec. 31, 2003

1982 Gloria - always a very pleasant wine, and one I've retasted many times. This bottle from my cellar where it has been since release. The expected sweet cedar and plum nose, silky smooth middle and medium long finish with some soft tannins still evident. This wine is holding well, although it will not improve, and has always been a more generous wine than the 1983. The 75 is more structured and a bit harder, but also a very nice wine, but I'd nominate this vintage for best drinking right now from the 'early' contingent.

No point holding them if you've got them. Lovely claret.

Gosset Brut Excellence - tasted some time after the Bordeaux, which we had with dinner. The usual pleasant wine with a fair bit of character. I attribute the slight bromine note in the nose to the fact that we were drinking it in the hot tub at midnight.........

I had a Gloria also...the 1995. Was not special at all. Don't think it will get any better in time either.

Bill, the '82 Gloria will also be a special wine for me, a bottle in about 1992 was an eyeopener as to what Bordeaux could be, and showed me that Napa Cab might not be the end-all of wine.

Dick, virtually every '95 Bordeaux (with the exception of a couple of satellite right-bankers) I've tasted over last 2 years has been dumb, but I hold out hope for the rest. I don't think the '95 Gloria is going to last 20+ years, but bet it will start drinking well in a couple years. Dale

We ate at a local restaurant on New Year's Eve, and took three bottles along for the group.

1989 E. Guigal Hermitage Blanc A little tired, with perhaps a touch of oxidation. Would have been better three or four years ago, but still a complex and intriguing bottle.

1991 E. Guigal Cote Rotie, Cotes Brune & Blonde Probably near or at its peak, and a most impressive wine.

2000 Pinot Noir, Beau Freres Upon first pouring, had a spritziness on the tongue that indicated the possibility of a secondary fermentation. We could feel the spritz in the mouth, but could find no bubbles. It went away with vigorous swirling. Despite the reputation and price, not my favorite Pinot -- as if it were trying to be full and fleshy and not succeeding. The Beau Freres was superb with rack of lamb; however, I'll take Pessagno Cellars Pinot Noir - Gary's Vineyard (Monterey) over this one any day.

Well, I have 4 bottles remaining. For a while it drank ok. But one of the ratings indicated a low acid wine for the 95 Gloria. Extremely low acid is what I detected when it drank a few months back.

Last night was definitely shut down.
