Question: Which vintage Ch Latour?

Congrats on the forthcoming, just a note, I am sure that someone will be pendantic about this in the group. "In our group?," but "economical" in English, at least inthe American version, denotes low cost so the proper question would be economic damage. Expect comments such as "The damage will hardly be economical" etc.

Wish I could offer better advice on this one

Economic it is, rather than economical. Thank you for correcting me. For obvious reasons, I am prepared to, as our Danish brethren say, bring the really fat wallet.

Cheers!

Hi Nils and congrats in advance!

I believe the 1970 would be the obvious choice and your cost would be in the

3-400USD range according to wine-search.com. Where to get that is an entirely different question... No, not that one in my cellar..., that'll be for my event!

I thought the same, but then the '70 would have been 'very young' too... :-) Anders

The 1970 Latour likely is as good as any Latour from the 70s. Many consider it the best wine of the vintage, and it is now the most expensive 70 Bordeaux at auction, with the possible exception of Petrus. I have tasted it, and it is still in very good form if it has been stored well. The auction price in the UK recently was 3520 Pounds per case of 12 bottles. In contrast, the other 70 first growths were well under 1000 Pounds. The 75 Latour was going for 1210, the 76 for 693, and the 78 for

957 Pounds per case.

] Hello; ] Here is a question for those with good vintage tables. ] Background: Self and XIna were married September 1981 (gad, but time flies!) ] which means we have a 25-year anniversary coming in this year. ] My thoughts have been to re-create parts of our Wedding dinner - possibly ] slightly modernized. Anyway. Of the wines drunk that happy day, the only one ] drinkable today would be the red, which was Ch Latour. Vintage I know not, ] but I had a feeling at t he time that it was VERY young. However, since I ] smart). ] So, please, good gentles all, which was the best 70's vintage for Latour, ] and what kind of economical damage am I looking at? ]

Congratulations Nils!

I'll chime in for '70.

But I guess that Maitre Spohn is the one who has notes on the vertical? Bill?

For the other wines, how about something from the well priced and entirely under-rated nuptial year?

I haven't had the '70, but the '78 Latour is a lovely wine, and lots cheaper than the '70.

But since you're not going to be sure anyway, why not get the '81- rep is pretty decent, and it costs less than the '78.

Not a bad idea, choosing the nuptial '81. Now, I found this:

You'll see that '81 is very fine+, '79 is excellent, '78 is very fine, '75 is excellent, '71 is very fine+ and lastly '70 is brilliant. Up to you then, Nils, to read the descriptions back to 1896... I'd go for the '24 had I the funds... :-) Happy hunting! Anders

I was at a tasting that had both the '70 and '82 Latour. The '82 was incredible, but the '70 was outstanding. Both are phenomenal, but the '70 is superior. I have had a few bottles of the '70 and all were excellent. And the '70 is probably cheaper than the '82.
