With masoor dal with spinach and some curried cauliflower, the Falkenstein "Niedermenniger Sonnenberg" Riesling Spatlese Feinherb, Just a whisper of sweetness, floral on the nose, apple and ginger on palate, deli cate without being fragile, B+

Some friends came over last night for a nice patio dinner on a lovely night . Opening wine was the NV Moutardier Rose Champagne. Sour cherry/umeboshi, interesting flavors but a bit coarse, not too long (others liked more). B/B

I grilled some chicken which was served on an herb salad with an anchovy/le mon dressing, Betsy made a black barley and fennel salad, and Nancy brought watermelon and feta. Dinner wines were:

2012 Schafer-Frohlich "Kupfergrube" Riesling Grosses Gewachs (doesn't actua lly say GG on label, but on the embossed bottle) Wow. Full, rich, peach & honeydew, mineral, orange peel. Long, full, delici ous. As a sometimes German-trocken sceptic this one pulls me in. A-

2013 Moulin di Gassac "Guilhem" Rose (Pays d'herault) Light, tart, refreshing. Cherry meets tomatillo. B/B+

2004 Picque Caillou (Pessac Leognan) Didn't really mean to hold this so long, but doing fine. Cassis and black p lums, pencil shavings, not complex but nice mature luncheon claret. B Tonight with grilled swordfish, lentils, asparagus, and salad, the 2011 Cha vy-Chouet " Les Enseigneres" Puligny-Montrachet (lieu-dit apparently), Broa d, ripe pear fruit, polished. Could use a bit more verve and zip. B

Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C drinkable. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a p arty where it was only choice.Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivi ty, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.
