campden tablets

Being new to winemaking, my question might a little basic but I'm having a hard time dissolving the campden tablet after crushing it.Anybody have any suggestions or is there a liquid substitute I can use? Thanks!

I tried Campden in the beginning and had the same problem. In order to make the tablets, there are insoluble fillers added to the sulphite. You can do a couple of things. Crush the campden in a little bit of wine or water and filter out the insoluble stuff, then add that to your wine. Or, you can buy the pure powdered Potassium Metabisulphite and use 1/4 tsp for 5 gallons. That is the way I have gone.

Jay & Greg,

I'm at work so I won't quote the directions, but I make a SO2 solution so that 1 tsp solution is equivilent to 1 Campden tablet. Very easy to measure, also put a more diluted version in my sprayer to mist stuff down. Very handy.

I wouldn't be overly concerned about any insoluble fillers in the campden tabs. As fermentation progresses and I look at the bottom of my carboy, I assure you that they aren't noticeable. They get lost during the racking process anyhow.

That is an easy one.... Drop Camden Tablets into a 187 ml bottle... Add water... Screw on cap... Let it sit for a few minutes then shake until completely disolved. It works much better if you crush the tablets but I usually don't bother.
