Centrifuging wine (update)

Tom mentioned a while back he uses a washing machine centrifuge. Some front load washing machines spin at 1200-1500 RPM. About twice the speed of uprights.

The secret in making front load washers work is in keeping the containers in place when it's not spinning. Voila... my old sleeping bag (don't use down-filled bag... too fluffy; the old, heavy, 3lb polyester filled ones are just right). Fold lengthwise in thirds, then tightly roll, tie, stuff into the drum (make sure the metal zipper is not touching the glass window of the washer; the zipper on mine is tucked in the inside fold), then untie and allow to expand to fill the empty space.

Fill the bottles to the brim and cap tightly.

Fill ALL open positions in the drum circumference so that the load won't shift during spin ramp-up and ramp-down. Balancing the load is very important. Put tightly capped empty bottles in all 'unused' positions (keeps 'em from collapsing when full ones press against 'em).

Capacity: 48 ounces to about 5 gallons (Nine half gallon PET plastic juice containers, plus three 16-22 oz PET plastic drink bottles).

Pros: Four spin cycles almost completely clears gross lees from 5 gallons of wine (great for noveau-style wines, where ya don't wanna wait months for gravity settling). You can go from milky haze gross lees to clear wine in an hour (three centrifuge/racking cycles). Undetectable vibration during spin.

Cons: The lees are compacted onto one side of the plastic bottle, which means some lees get resuspended into solution while pouring out the wine after spin [second generation will use cut foam pockets so the bottles stand radially... compacting the lees into the bottom of the bottles. This will reduce the load capacity a bit, but hey, the motor does get kinda warm after a few spin cycles with 5 gallons load.] My washing machine doesn't have a 'spin only' cycle (and I have to turn the water off at the spigot to keep it from injecting water during spin). [Guess what I'm doing when the warranty is up.]

The best part? "Honey, what are you doing?" (My wife's precious puzzled remark as I'm experimenting with the best way to fold/insert the sleeping bag into the drum).

P.S. While googling (+spin +rpm +centrifuge +wine) I came across a funny blog titled "Things I wish I had in my kitchen". Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
