Some of my favorite "cheap beers"

Just because I know beer, and I know what I'm talking about...

Huber Bock (I could swear it's just "Berghoff's Bock" sold cheaper) Burger Classic (I'll admit this is an aquired taste) Caguama (Hey, it's light, flavorful, and has a muy-cool turtle on the label) Saranac IPA (Not a great IPA, but a great for the price IPA) Little Kings Cream Ale (I don't care... it IS the best American cream ale)

You're not alone in this suspicion. Same flavor, same color, same brewer, hmm...

I like it better than the "other" one- Genesee Cream Ale, but you gotta admit that Genny pretty much created the style, and that LK's are closer in taste to US style ales like Ballantine (ie, a prominent hop flavor, until GCA).

BUT, are Little Kings still made? I had been looking forward to trying the "new" version, when Snyder closed the Schoenling brewery and moved LK to Frederick, but the new stuff never showed up at Shangy's (where I used to have to go to get it and where it certainly brought down my "per case of beer" average price.) Now that Snyder is/was having trouble, what happened to Little Kings? I saw threads about Burger returning to the Ohio market, but never got the story as to what happened to Snyder and it's family of brews....

Hey, I live in Cin. city and have seen plenty of the "new" (actually a return to Little King's old "classic" formula) LK's in the stores, but I have no idea who's running and manufacturing it since Snyder went under. As a matter of fact, I would not swear to the LK's in the store being new-made rather than just the lawyers emptying the contents of Snyder's warehouses... this is also true of Burger, which I haven't been able to locate at my usual stores (but have found (possibly remnant) cases of at out-of-the-way markets)!

Snyder's still making LK's. Just talked to the head brewer for Snyder/Frederick yesterday, Andy Tveekrem (formerly at Great Lakes Brewing). Snyder is not "under," they're in receivership, which he described as court-ordered bankruptcy. It's put quite a crimp in their operating, since everything has to be on a cash basis now, but they are brewing. "Our contract brands are keeping us going," he said, I assume because the contractors pay cash at the loading dock.

Well, that'd mean I'd have to touch one first.

I imagine the same is true with the Crooked River brands that Snyder/Fredrick acquired.

Though it ain't what it used to be.....Ballantine Ale is quite quaffable.

It's from Monroe, Wisconsin, and I can only find it across the Ohio River from Cin. city in Covington, Kentucky for seven bucks for a Huber 12 pack (bottles).

You may not get a chance to... it may not be produced anymore.

Kroger's house version of a Latino cerveza, brewed in El Salvador.

Well, I like 'em, and Saranac's is tasty and inexpensive.

Hey... Little Kings wins!

The "classics" being Bud, Miller, and Coors, of course. ;-)

IIRC, he prefers "premium imports" like Killian's.
