British Beweries history

Hi all.

Does anyone know of a good source for detailed history of brewing in the UK?

I am particularly interested in finding out as much as possible about two specific, small local breweries that existed in Victorian times.

Any help much appreciated.

Regards

Dave

Many of the different CAMRA branches have enthusiasts that have built up files on the various breweries in their area. In some cases they have published at least summaries of the collected information.

Contact the local branch.

You want "Beer and Britannia: An Inebriated History of Britain" by Peter Haydon -

Or "Beer: The Story of the Pint" by Martyn Cornell -

I've read both 2 or 3 times each. If you're going to choose one of the two go for Pete Haydon's

If you're going to be secretive about the breweries you're interested in I can't be more specific.

A century of British Brewers 1890 - 1990 (published 1994)

However there may only be _one_ line in the book detailing the brewery you want so it's probably worth giving us the names (and location) of the breweries you want to research and maybe readers of this newsgroup could look in the books they have.

Hi all

Thanks for the excellent quick replies.

I didn't mean to be secretive, just not flood you with too much information.

The two breweries are:

Saltash Brewery, Saltash, Cornwall. This brewery seems to have merged with several others in 1889 to become Plymouth Breweries

The Stag Brewery, Wooburn, Buckinghamshire, company name Thomas Williams & Sons. This continued into the twentieth century and I think eventually became part of Thomas Wethered and Sons Ltd, Marlow

Many thanks for your interest

Data from a Century of British Brewing

One liner in my book confirming your data Fredrick Richard Vaughan, Saltash Brewery formed part of Plymouth Brewery 1889

However, Plymouth Brewery Ltd. Regent Street, Stonehouse Registered October 1889 to amalgamate: Samuel Vosper, Regent Brewery Amanda Henrietta Butcher, Anchor Brewery, Chapple Street, Stonehouse G.Rayall, Frankfort Street Brewery Hicks & Co., South Devon Brewery, 2 Willow Street All the above in Plymouth plus Fredrick Richard Vaughan, Saltash Brewery, Saltash. Acquired by Courage Ltd in December 1970 for 6.5 million brewing ceased 1983

again probably just confirming your data

Wooburn Green Thomas Williams & Co Ltd. Royal Stag Brewery Registered 1891 Acquired by Wethered and Sons Ltd in October 1927 with 35 tied houses.

Marlow Thomas Wethered and Sons Ltd, Marlow Brewery, High Street Founded 1798, registered March 1899 Acquired by Strong and Co Ltd. in 1949 with 236 tied houses. Brewery ceased in operation in 1991 as Whitbread Wethered ltd.

Fantastic. Thanks very much for that. It does tell me a few thinngs I didn't know but of course, I would still like to find out more!

Does the source book have any further references by any chance?

By the way, my reason for interest is family history - Frederick Richard Vaughan of the Saltash Brewery was my great-great uncle and the Managing Director of Thomas Williams & Co. was his brother Herbert Vaughan, my great-great grandfather.

Kind regards

You may get some more ideas by looking these firms up in directories of the time. There is a website which I think is

formatting link
which has some of these resources digitised and searchable. If it's not that URL then do a Google on "historical directories" and you should find them.

In that case, if you access the family history websites you should be able to find others who are researching this family. I suggest you start with

formatting link
and see if you can find any mailing lists or discussion boards on the Vaughan surname, or Cornwall or Buckinghamshire. That should start you off!

Cheers

As I said in my original post a lot of one line entries (mainly lists of owners and take-overs with dates).

There is a comprehensive index of brewers in the book and the only two entries for Vaughan were the two I listed.

The book is published by the Brewery History Society who have a web site at

They have a brewing archive at Birmingham Central Library -- see their web site.
