Which Spaten? They brew several.
Bitberger is a pretty typical northern German pils. The real deal, not the flabby s*it like Beck's and Warsteiner. It's not as dry and bitter as some north-German pils like Jever or König, but it's a good deal drier than a southern German pils like Spaten and the other Munich breweries make. And it's a lot more hoppy than Spaten (and other Munich breweries') helles. The northern German pils aren't particularly malty, especially in comparison to their Bohemian and Bavarian cousins. Bit's a good, if not particularly advernturous, example of the style.

Not to mention the fact that it is Bitburger. Joris
Doh! I can't believe that not only did I not notice the misspelling, but I perpetrated it in my reply. I know better than that.
