Well, I know Australian Bitters are in fact lagers, but to what kind of European Lagers can be compared? Is Castlemaine XXXX considered a bitter?

P.S. I am not trying to start a flame on how crappy VB or any other so-called bitter tastes. I am just trying to figure out which beers deserve such an appellation.
