'Dots" near the bottom of beer bottles

Oct 23, 2003 3 Replies

I have noticed that there is a series of bumps (dots) around the bottom edge of beer bottles. They seem to form a kind of binary code but I have been unable to break it.

Does anyone know what they are for?

Not sure, but there are similar bumps on the shoulder of some bottles, and brewers have told me that they are there so that some bottling machines can better 'grip' the bottles. Might be the same reason.

i'd always just assumed they were there to prevent condensation from causing the bottle to slide. but then again, i am a world reknown idiot.
