The Beer Machine and Mr. Beer make bad beers. If you want to get into homebrewing, find a homebrewing supply store in your area and visit it. You'll find better equipment and someone who can help you if you run into any problems using it.

Ask over in the rec.crafts.brewing newsgroup. It's focussed on brewing beer, while alt.beer is more about beer appreciation and SPAM. That said, if you really want to brew beer, don't go with one of the "Mr. Beer" or "Beer Machine" type kits. They're not very flexible if you want to advance your skills. They're also not cost-effective. Find a good homebrew shop near you (physically or on the web) and get a starter kit.

Two reasons I mentioned online shops. Firstly, even in large urban centers of population store-front homebrew shops can be few and far between, and even then some such shops are run by such complete buttheads that the aspiring brewer would be better off with a kit and a book or two. Plus I know there are good online shops out there that have great customer/brewer support (Grape and Granary and Listermann's place come immediately to mind).

Same caveats apply, of course.
