IPA comp.

I got my shipment of (mostly)West coast IPAs:

Lost Coast Indica(new to me) Rate Beer rating: 3.94 Lagunitas Rate Beer rating: 3.64 Rogue I2PA(new to me) Rate Beer rating: 3.88 Anderson Valley Hop Ottin Rate Beer Rate Beer rating: 3.75 Jamaica Sunset(new to me) Rate Beer rating: 3.31 Avery(new to me) Rate Beer rating: 3.62

The Hop Ottin I've actually had available to me in Casper...outstandingly hoppy IPA. A wonderful summertime thirst quencher...yeah sure. ;^) I'm now sipping on the Avery from Colorado. It has a much more complex flavour than the Hop Ottin. Still powerful in the hop department(I'm guessing that it's dry hopped) but I sense a malt presence there. I'd rate the Avery over the Anderson Valley but it's a tough call.

I also got some Traquair House Ale(Rate Beer rating: 3.74) and James Squire Porter.(Rate Beer rating: 3.39) The TH is one I've really enjoyed in the past and the JSP is new to me.

I thought I'd post the ratings of each brew from the Rate Beer dot com site just to give an indicator as to how others feel about these beers.(5 points=perfect)

Best regards, Bill

I've had all of those. Lagunitas and Hop Ottin are outstanding!

The JS porter is okay -- a bit on the tame side. When I was down under, I preferred Speight's porter. Better porters are made in the U.S., such as the Smuttynose, Sierra Nevada, and Ipswich porters.

If you like really hoppy IPA's, you should love Rogue's Imperial IPA. I'm not real fond of the others, but that's because I can get better from local brewer's (SFBA) who've yet to acheive anything beyond local distribution. My two faves are Hoptown IPA and Drake's IPA, both GABF gold winners, but still very much micro breweries. I will say, though, that when I'm out of the area and can't get my local faves, I buy Hop Ottin when I can find it. Lagunitas also gets a lot of buzz, here, among IPA fans and I don't know why. I've never thought much of it.

The Lagunitas IPA I thought was ok but...I much preferred the Maximus that I had in the past. ;^)

In the looks department, Jamaica Sunset wins hands down...beautifully cloudy IPA.(I love them that way) Overall, I'd rate it behind Hop Ottin and Avery but ahead of Lagunitas. Only 2 more to go and they're the 2 highest rated on the Rate Beer site. ;^)

Casper...outstandingly

I have to agree with you but...I felt a bit nostalgic(lived near Sydney back in early 70's) about a real Aussie import so I had to give it a try. What I didn't like about it was the very thin body but that wasn't enough for me to give it the alt dot beer rating of s**te.

I've read all about the Drakes...lustfully, mind you. ;^)

TG IPA is by far the best IPA one can ever have. Unfortunately, it is a very rare find for anyone beyond Oregon. (fortunately I live in Oregon)

Lagunitas IPA is like a "lite beer" when compared to the Maximus.

Just like Stone Ruination makes Stone IPA a lite beer.

Is that Terminal Gravity IPA?

Yes it is Terminal Gravity....my bad for using the local slang for it.

One of the IPAs I buy at Trader Joe's is from Portland: MacTarnahan's. Right now I'm comparing all three IPAs they sell here in San Diego.

6-pk Rate Beer Hop Ottin' $6.99 3.75 Acme $5.99 3.25 MacTarnahan's $5.49 3.31

I used to think the Acme was OK until I drank one right after a Hop Ottin'. North Coast puts out some good beers, but apparently this IPA is not one of them. I see that a local microbrewery, Alesmith is rated at 4.07, has anyone tried it? I'll have to try that one next.

I agree completely! I go out of my way to restaraunts htat have TG IPA. Fortunately, the Hult Center here in Eugene (where I work)started carrying it at their lobby bars last year, so you can get it when you see a show.

Sounds like it's worth trying on my next trip through your great state.

It's not only worth trying, it's worth going out of your way to find it.

Ah, but they also brew Red Seal Ale, one of my favorite IPA's (after HopDevil and 60 Minute probably). We get it occassionally on the East Coast but most stores seem to favorite stocking the other NC brews, including often the 3 Acme brews.

I will say this for the James Squire beers: They're better than VB.
