IPA comp.

I'll one-up you on that...it's worth making the 8 hour drive from Portland to Enterprise to get it directly from the source!!

Darn. It's way on the east side of the state. I usually go up to the Seattle area via the coast.

Maybe there's something else to do out in the east part of the state. Hunting maybe? That goes good with beer.

Haven't had the Avery but I'd rank the other ones as follows (FWIW)

1.Anderson Valley (tied with Whitehawk and fresh Hopdevil as my top IPAs)
  1. (close 2nd) Rouge I2PA
  2. Lagunitas
  3. Mad River (Jamacia Sunset)
  4. Lost Coast (Indica)

The top three are pretty close for me and while I love the Mad river Jamicia Red and the Lost Coast Downtown Brown, their IPA's don't impress me quite as much.

I tried the JS pils and Amber when I was in Australia a few years ago and was very impressed.I've tried the pils, amber, porter, and IPA in the US however, and they haven't been nearly as good. I'm not sure if the difference was due to the distance the beer had been shipped or the fact that I was drinking way too much VB and Toohey's New in Australia.

As far as stuff to do, my friends and I did some hiking and toured around the Wallowa mountains and the small towns that surrounded the area.

Alesmith 22oz $3.99 N/A 4.07

I am right now comparing Alesmith to Hop Ottin'. In contrast Alesmith tastes more like a pale ale, too mellow for me. I'm also scratching Acme off my list, but MacTarnahan's is still a good buy. Over all, the Hop Ottin' wins in my opinion. I frequently drink Stone pale ale, because one of my favorite bars has no IPA's and Stone is very much a local favorite. I love the IPA from my favorite microbrewery, Oggi's. Unfortunately Oggi's is local and there are only a few outside San Diego county and they don't bottle their product yet. They are expanding into Phoenix right now.

Red Seal is more of a pale ale, isn't it?

I think the Acme IPA is pretty good, especially at the 90 cents per bottle it costs at Trader Joe's. But I do prefer Hop Ottin'.

I picked up some Brooklyn East India IPA today. Anyone had this?

Can't say that I draw that fine a line between the two but, you're right, the don't call it an IPA. IPA's traditionally were a bit stronger and hoppier than a brewer's "regular" pale ale. Certainly Red Seal is hoppier than most English pale ales (and IPA's, for that matter) but isn't really in the running for a hop monster. On the other hand, it's a LOT hoppier than it's "sister" pale ale, Acme (45 IBU's versus

21). I say it's Hawaiian Pale Ale, at least (you know, half way to India...).

As I probably noted, for some reason Red Seal isn't carried by a lot of NJ retailers who DO stock their other beers, as well as the Acme line. Red Seal, when you do find it, is going for $9 a six pack and the Acme is usually a buck or two cheaper.

I pick it up occassionally- it should be better - and it's often old even in NJ (not the biggest seller of the Brooklyn line, I suppose). IIRC, they claim to have modelled it after Ballantine IPA (or am I making that up?) but I don't taste it. Have a feeling that a fresh bottle would be better than the ones I've had.

Yeah, I had some Brooklyn East India shipped to me a couple of years ago... my expectations were probably a bit too high..

Best regards, Bill who's sippin on a 60 Minute Ale. :^)

Yeah, I don't see much of the North Coast beers on the east coast. Red Seal is good, but I wouldn't pay $9 a sixer for it when I can get a sixer of a good NE microbrew for $7.

Well, my sample of it was fresh, and good but not great. That's been my reaction to most of the Brooklyn beers.
