Could it be West Virginia ? Or New Jersey ?
Utah. Mississippi.

Alabama. Arkansas. Idaho. Probably Wyoming, though I'm not sure they're still a state.
Though I suppose Idaho and Wyoming can bring in beer from their neighbors, beer that tends to be somewhat okay.

South Australia. In fact all of Australia. The BIG two (Carlton United Breweries and Lion Nathan) buy up all the micros and (usually) shut them down or change the products to the usual tasteless swill. Lion Nathan has a hostile take-over bid right now for Australia's largest micro - Coopers Brewery, a company also well known for its home brew kit beer products. Yep. Pretty soon you'll have a choice of beer from just TWO breweries, even home brew, in this country and all this is okayed by the consumer and competition watchdog (The ACCC). Think yourselves lucky, you Americans. Steve W (Adel)
I have almost no familiarity with West Virginia, but it seems to be completely off the beer radar, so I have to figure it has reason to be. I'd throw Arkansas and Mississippi into the mix.
South Georgia. This is redneck country, Dale Jr. fans, Bud is king here.

I had some decent beer in Atlanta. What's the name of that brewpub on the north side? Nice lagers and ales, good food.
Wyoming has Sanke River in Jackson, Snake River in Lander, Bottoms Up in Pinedale, Altitude in Laramie, Bighorn(C Potts) in Cheyenne, one in Rock Springs whose name escapes me, and Wyoming State Brewing in Casper....I think maybe I missed one or two but that's probably it.(There's one in Saratoga but they carry the Coopersmith stuff)

Throw Iowa into the mix. One micro that bottles (Millstream), a few Granite City outlets (to which "suck" is a generous term), and a few scattered brewpubs in what pass for major cities. If you're in Iowa City, you at least have the option of visiting John's Grocery for a good selection of bottles, but, if you're talking actual brewing culture, Iowa sucks ass.
Major bummer, mate!
Sounds like a perfectly good reason to take up home brewing. Not likely they are going to be able to control malt and water. ;)
nb
Atlanta does have a decent selection, it's the Southern part of the State that's lacking.

West Virginia doesn't have much, but it DOES have WV Brewing, where Ned Strausser makes one of the very best dry Irish stouts in the world. Really. Man's a genius with dark, dry ale. And his proteges go out and make it in other places. It's a Good Thing.
Probably Utah which has some truly peculiar laws when it comes to alchohol sales. But they are Mormon....
I've had some Utah craft beers that were surprisingly good, given the idiotic laws in that state. And I still like the name "Polygamy Porter."
In general, the beer wastelands of the Southeastern USA are going to be the contenders for "worst state for microbrews," so I'll go with the likes of Alabama and Mississippi.
NJ isn't all bad. We've got Flying Fish, Heavyweight, River Horse & Climax plus a few others. Leo

Utah has Uinta, Desert Edge, Park City (a low-grav stout that puts Guinnnnnnnessssss to shame), and Squatter's (which, despite the name, is worth visiting).
I vote for Nevada with Great Basin and not much else.

Heh! I've actually had VB on handpump.
Cascade can be found. And when you find it, drink it.

Jersey has some nice beers going for it. You got Climax Brewing Company, High Point Wheat Beer and Heavyweight Brewing Company.

Check the GABF records: Utah damn near has a lock on the schwarzbier category for the past five or six years. Dunno why that would be.
