Agars Ale ?

I have been asked by a supplier if I'd like to try Agar's Ale (I think that's the spelling) I know nothing about it - can anyone shed any light?

Thanks Peter. That could be right. This beer name suggestion was read out over the phone by a 3rd party and he didn't think to get a spelling of the name.

I've looked for Hagars Mash - but can't find it on the web.

Chris Further to Hagars Mash ABV 4.0% according to Beermad (a very good website for beerhunters) it is listed as dead but could have been ressurected as a seasonal or special brew!

Try as I might, I cannot find Agars ale. Isn't agar a substance derived from seaweed or something and used for growing cultures? I found the defunct Hagars Mash on the web too.

This beer is called apparently - Agar's Ale - is current and being offered and suggested by a beer supplier at a very reasonable cask price (under 60 UKP) but I declined it in my purchases because I know nothing about it.

Thanks again for the dark Mild suggestions. I settled for Black Cat in the end. The range should suit most tastes - and we have Stella too for those that want it.

Agar agar is a vegetarian gelling agent, and used as a substitute for gelatine. I've only ever used it in jellies, not beer.

Good selection given the limitations of the event. Not sure about the Speckled Hen, but then we're not keen on GK around these parts :-)

Solved this mystery at the weekend; so able to tie up this loose end.

Agars is actually a beer distributor here in Buxton. They make - or have made for them - a 3.9% a.b.v. English style Ale sold by the cask and called Agar's Ale. It is a low cost brew to buy by the cask. It has a black on yellow with blue surround pump clip with the image of a horned hemeted muscle man drinking a tankard.

I haven't seen or tasted the beer yet.

Surely that would be Hagar's Ales? As in Hagar the Horrible. See:

Indeed. It did cross my mind that it might be a poor pun. The pump clip drawing looks like Hagar the cartoon; the name on the van is Agar's.

Hi Agar's Ale is advertised in Innspire the newsletter of Chesterfield CAMRA. It is supplied by Agars Soft Drinks Woodthorpe Road Chesterfield 01246823855. I suspect is is brewed by a regional brewer and simply rebranded.
