Barcelona: beer prospects

Ola!,

What's Barcelona like for beer drinkers? I presume they sell Mahou lager or similar in bottles or on draught.

  • Someone here mentioned a Paulaner bar -- where is this, exactly? * Also, what are prices like compared to UK? * On a related alcoholic note -- is local champagne (cava) very cheap in Barca?

Thanks Bruce

Generalyl, yes - most tapas bars have their own house sparkling wine (not all of it is strictly "cava" since that term is a denomination of origin) and that's the stuff to drink. Some have cider instead.

My favourite is El Xampanyet, which is in a back alley opposite the Picasso museum. Their house speciality is a fairly sweet but very palatable sparkling wine and it's very cheap. On the food front, their speciality is anchovies but the rest of the tapas are good too. It's a wonderful place, magic atmosphere.

That stuff is lethal! Had some on holiday in the Costa Brava recently. Estrella Damm is less damaging.

BTW Avoid their web sites like the plague!

(Not sure what this has to do with real ale.)
