BCA Wheat Beers in Italy

Just come back from a week at Lake Garda where I expected that the only drink I would get would be the local Bardolino wine but to my surprise I found that most of the cafes and hotels had at least one BC wheat beer on offer.

I managed to find Schneider, Franziskaner, Maisel's, Erdinger, Hacker-Pschorr and Lauterbacher also Erdinger dunkel and Lauterbacher dunkel. There was also a cafe on the coastal path between Garda and Bardolino that sold Weihenstephan from a pump, probably keg, but it tasted fine to me - very refreshing.

Now a question. Is there a difference between "Hefe Weisse" and "Stephani Weisse"? The first is on the neck label of a bottle of standard Lauterbacher, the second on a bottle of Lauterbacher dunkel.

Thanks, Dave

This particular bit of Italy is notoriously popular with german tourists, and has been since the 1950s at least, if that may constitute the beginning of an explanation... ;o)

[Not too sure what you mean as "difference" ...]

Looking up the website to the brewery (http.//

and expecially the range of beers

Lauterbacher do seem to brew quite a few Weizenbiere. The name of each individual product does not appear on teh main lable, but on the neck label, which indeed is not a very common practice.

Hefe Weisse seems to be the bog-standard, pale, unfiltered wheat beer, not an indication of style (which would probably have been "Hefeweizen").

Then there's the Edel Weisse ("noble white", plus a pun on "edelweiss"), filtered, the Schlanke Weisse ("thin white"), low-cal, etc.

And then there's Stephani Weisse, a dark unfiltered/BC wheat beer... Stephani Weisse means "Stephen's white" and must IMHO be linked to some dedication to St. Stephen (Bavaria being a very catholic region).

Cheers !

Thanks,

I assumed that it was a description rather than the name of the beer.
