Derby Wetherspoons

The Babington Arms in Derby has made it to the 2004 GBG. This shows that hard work and commitment to real ale pays off. The pub has a very varied beer range, rather than the usual stock beers found in most Spoons pubs. It also has featured brewery weekends, with up to 20 beers from the featured brewery. Recent weekends have seen the likes of Burton Bridge, Archers, Leek, Wolf and Iceni, among many others.

Does anyone know of any other Spoons pubs with this approach to beer? If you're in Derby the Babington Arms is definitely worth a look. These days it has more guest beers than the legendary Flowerpot, and the quality is high.

Brewery weekends, constantly changing beers and massive beer ranges don't get pubs into the GBG (though it might make the difference between qualifying pubs in a full list). Selling consistently good beer is what counts and its what most JDW's fail to do, something I'm reminded of in

90% of visits to my local ones.

Unfortunately JDW are also cursed by rotating manager syndrome so even their pitiful scattering of good managers have a disadvantage: we don't know if they'll still be in the pub when the guide reaches the shelves!

Given the competition in Derby I'm willing to believe it really is a good JDW, rather than the 'best of a poor lot' some branches nominate.

I can confirm, as I live in Derby, that the BAbbington is indeed in teh ber guide due to its consistently high quality of beer. As apul syas, due to a number of pubs in Derby having good beer, the Babbington has that "extra" which gets it in the guide.

I can recommend apying it a vsist when in Derby.
