I should add that, despite all that, the UK retains imperial measures for freeflow dispense of beer and cider. For now.

AIUI the CE standard stipulates an *average* rather than a minimum quantity. So some "pint" glasses could actually hold less than a pint. Another excuse for pubs to give short measure?

AIUI, the UK system also stipulated an average, and only a sample of glasses actually had to be tested before a whole batch could be stamped.
All in all a good reason to ensure full measure at the point of dispense, because as you say the glass itself might not necessarily be a full pint. Some glasses could be a bit over, of course, but I expect they would be the first ones to get accidentally dropped behind the bar.

Bloody Angles and Saxons with their new-fangled drinking vessels; bring back the beaker, people!
Anyway, I thought we were an autonomous collective!

Yes, but we don't use it as a rule. :-)

What have the Saxons ever done for us, eh?
Well, Edgar the Peaceful (c. 943-975) decreed that all measures must agree with standards kept in London and Winchester. And not Brussels.

I drink my ale from a drinking horn in true pagan style. I care nothing for the usurpers who have occupied the throne all these years. King Harold was the last true king of England.

That's the trouble with ironic comments about short measure, people miss the point just like they miss the beer.

Mmmm. I never voted to join the EU, or had the chance to. Did anyone else in the UK?

I voted with my feet and every time I see reports like this and see what's happening over there on the BBC news site I see fewer reasons for ever going back!
