Help Save Historic Merseyside Pub

A friend has just emailed me about the proposed destruction of a historic Merseyside pub.

The Great Eastern, New Ferry, dates back to 1862 Wirral lies near the place where Isembard Kingdom Brunel's ship of the same name was broken up.

The pub has been closed for some time, it is not listed withEnglish Heritage, but they have now been approached, it seems this may have given the owners reason to act more quickly in demolishing the pub, in order to clear the site & build flats.

A petition has been set up to try to safeguard this historic building, I know it's not been trading for a while & nor was it recently a real ale venue, but I hope some of you will support the fight nonetheless.

Hi,

Petitions won't do any good against a developer. If it is not listed, is it in a conservation area? If so, there is protection against demolition.

If the pub meets the criteria for listing, the Council could quickly issue a Building Preservation Notice but if the subsequent listing application fails, the Council may have to pay compensation to the developer so they will be reluctant unless there is a really strong case.

I'm afraid the law is biassed against preservation of pubs :-(

Good luck

Paul

Cheers for the reply Paul, I'll ask my friend if the pub is in a conservation area (I doubt it, though).

AFAIK they were refused their last planning application (to build flats incorporating the existing building) it's rumoured that they were so p****ed off with that decision, they decided to wreck the inside & leave the building unsecured, open to allow kids to set a fire, thus getting around all this pesky regulation nonsense.

Full details from someone who was there is here

(scroll down to Trearan's post on 5th March)

Pictures elsewhere on the site (may need to sign up?) seem to show how the pub was left after the removal guys / tradesmen left - with external doors left off their hinges!

Cheers, MikeMcG.
