No Tasters at Lees Pubs

I recently visited the Rain Bar in Manchester and asked for a taste of the seasonal beer, I think it was Razzmatazz. I was told by the barmaid that they weren't allowed to do that. She did give me one (a taste, that is) eventually after making sure the gaffer wasn't about.

Is this common practice in Lees pubs? I've never had a problem with sampling beer before buying it in any other pubs. Most will offer a sample if asked what a beer is like. It's easier than trying to explain what it tastes like.

Cheers, Lee.

It wasn't a problem having a taste in Weatherspoons this afternoon. (Followed by a pint)

I sympathise with the pub to some extent. I believe some people do abuse the system which of course affects the genuine request. By abuse, I mean, repeated taste requests particularly when busy. I came across this abuse first hand when working at Worcester beer festival. A group of individuals were clearly taking the p***, asking for taste after taste when we were VERY busy. I felt sorry for the genuine customers who were waiting for a drink. My response was to give them a tiny sample and then move directly onto the next customer.

Beer fests aside, I virtually never ask for a taster in pub, expecting to buy a half to find out what a beer is like. Now I'm in Australia, I keep getting accidentally getting tasters in the handful of brew-pubs and other outlets for drinkable beer: "I'll try a please", meaning "can I have a pot of " frequently results in a taster. (A pot is the standard glass of beer in Victoria - roughtly a half pint.)

I agree with Brett.

The number of times I've had to wait in a Wetherspoons while someone samples every beer on hand pull, then orders either the first one they tasted or a Lager is stupid.

Yes the chance to sample first should be there but the amoun tof abuse that goes on is ridiculous.

That is exactly what I do when working at the GBBF. The genuine ones wait and then order - the time wasters generally go away.
