Sedbergh / Kirkby Stephen

I've got Cumbria County Council's excellent integrated public transport booklet in front of me, and so I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations for Sedbergh (there's nothing in the GBG) or any other places on the road to Kirkby Stephen.

TIA

Don't know of any specifically. You could do a lot worse than locating a copy of the excellent local CAMRA guide 'Cumbrian Real Ale guide' which covers from Carlisle to Kendal, and Whitehaven to Brough. You'll probably find quite a lot of Black Sheep (beer - not animal) and a smattering of Jennings.

Thanks, I've been meaning to buy that for ages, so I've sent off for it now.

There's Dent of course.

Thanks - yes there is, but it's a bit difficult by public transport from here.

And (heresy alert) to be perfectly honest, I wouldn't go out of my way to drink Dent ales.

Dent beers are, as my landlord describes them, BOB beers (brown and boring).

If, as I guess you are, you are based in Lancaster, I would have thought that a perfect day out would have been up to the Prince of Wales at Foxfield by train, or the Watermill at Ings. But of course, with the Water Witch and John of Gaunts, why not just stay in town?

Sorry I don't agree Carlisle State Bitter at Stourbridge Beer Festival was my beer of the festival. Wonderful stuff.

He he - I've just got back from the JOG :) You obviously know the area.

We had a great CAMRA trip up to the Watermill a while ago. Between us we sampled over a dozen beers, and there wasn't a duff one amongst them. I gather they've started brewing their own beer now.

To my shame, I've never made it up to Foxfield, but that must be remedied soon.

You won't regret Foxfield. Especially good as the railway station is a request stop. It's one of life's little pleasures to have a few pints in the Prince and then hold your hand out (as with a bus) to stop the train. Trains have loos on them as well - an added advantage.

You'll have done another of my faves - the marton arms, nr Ingleton - no doubt. The only problem is that you need to take a mortgage out to buy the beers.

I'd also recommend the Manor Arms in Broughton and the Anglers Arms, Haverthwaite adjacent to the historic railway.

Had a branch trip to Lakes yesterday:

Eagle and Child, staveley Watermill, Ings Royal Oak, Bowness on Windermere Anglers Arms, Haverthwaite White Hart, Bouth The Manor, Broughton-in-Furness and of course Prince of Wales, Foxfield

What a day out - good beer, weather, company and food at POW. What more can we ask?

Keighley and Craven CAMRA
