Well I suppose it was always going to be simply a matter of time before Carlsberg wielded the axe. That site, so large and close to the centre of Leeds, must be worth a fortune.
It seems we'll still have the Tetley brand name but it won't be the same. As they used to keep emphasising in the Tetley Brewery Museum, now closed for many years "It's the water that makes the beer"
Funny - I can remember Warrington-brewed Tetleys after the takeover of Walkers by the former. I didn't think it was a patch on the Yorkshire-brewed version.
Having written that, I first recall drinking Leeds Tetleys in the Red Deer in Sheffeild in about 1971 or 1972. It took a lot of getting used to, being a particularly bitter brew with a distinct taste, but I learned to enjoy it. The Carlsberg-brewed version isn't a patch on it, but it has improved noticeably over the last year or so, the inference being that they had started using better ingredients. So - a last gasp effort.
I'll miss it more than you, but only because it's such a rare beer to find in cask form nowadays. I can only think of one pub within reasonable striking distance of where I'm typing this which still serves it.
It might surprise you to learn that there are very many pubs selling cask Tetleys in West Yorkshire, and that the beer has a lot of aficionados.
