Tetley's moving from Leeds

I haven't thought much of Tetley's for many years, I may have been unlucky as to where I tried it or even my tastes changed but it wasn't a patch on the stuff I drank as a youngster 30-40 years ago, we used to walk past pubs which didn't have the huntsman sign outside, it was that good.

As to smoothflow and its ilk, disgusting stuff, work of the devil invented for people with dead taste buds.

I don't get round real pubs much these days but even when I did Imperial wasn't a brew found in abundance round Huddersfield, the only place I can remember drinking it was a pub just outside Darlington station while waiting for a train to Redcar to visit a mate, a very nice brew as I remember, was it a zoned brew?

It was for many years brewed for the North East but did seem to creep into pubs further South from time to ti,me.

They brewed one called Fallstaff too which was supposed to resemble Ramsden's Light Mild. Only available round Halifax. Not sure whether that was just keg though never seen it on a handpump.

Given their influence on what happened to Ansells and particularly the mild

- no sympathy.

Oddly, according to GBG-2010 - Tetley's Dark Mild & Mild were already being brewed by Marston's, presumably at Banks's in Wolverhampton? (while Draught Bass is brewed by Marston's in Burton for InBev).

Tetley's Imperial seems not to get a mention. But elsewhere in the guide -

• Everard's (Leicester) brew Worthington Bitter (ex-Burton), Hancock's HB (ex-Cardiff) & M&B Brew XI (ex-Birmingham & Hell, if memory serves),
• Well's&Young's (Bedford - Young's ex-London) brew Courage (ex- Bristol).
• Brain's (now in Hancock's old brewery, Cardiff) brew Flower's IPA (ex-Cheltenham)
• Highgate (Walsall ex-Bass) brew Stones Bitter (ex-Sheffield).
• I think S&N (now Heineken, Holland, ex Edinburgh & Newcastle, then Gateshead, though now they also own Caledonian, Edinburgh!) were at one point brewing cask John Smith's at Burtonwood (near Warrington, now owned by Thomas Hardy, ex-Dorchester) though this may have now reverted to Tadcaster?

Are you all keeping up? I doubt I am - things change so fast in the weird un-wonderful world of macro-brewing.

My favourite suggestion to keep Tetley in Leeds was to get Leeds Brewery (relatively new micro) to contract-brew the beers for Carlsberg - the difference in size is phenomenal (going on the GBG's suggestion of Tetley's cask volume alone & the brewlength at Leeds - they'd have to brew 134 times every week & while ignoring all their current production!
